Review: Maybelline Velvet Matte Liquid Lip Colour

Recently, I got my hands on one of the new Maybelline Velvet Matte lip colours, that has a similar packaging to their lip polish line. I was excited that they came out with a matte liquid lipstick so I knew I had to try them. I got the shade MAT12 because I wanted something that I could wear on a daily basis.

First things first: I don’t wear lip gloss. I don’t like the texture and the feeling of it on my lips. They’re thick and goopy in consistency and I really don’t like it. Unfortunately, the Velvet Matte reminded me of that. It felt heavy on my lips and it doesn’t dry matte immediately. This also didn’t last long on my lips — I’d say it lasted around 4 to 5 hours? It definitely won’t hold up against greasy food, that’s for sure.

Also, the peachy-nude shade that I picked up turned out to be warmer than I thought it’d be against my skin. I didn’t like it. It’s too light and too warm that I think it washes my skin tone out. However, I decided to try to play around with it anyways. So, I lined my lips with a wine red colour and applied the Velvet Matte on top. Blot it out once, applied another layer and blotted it slightly again, and it came to a shade of pinkish nude that I really like. I came to the conclusion that in terms of shade, I can work with it and incorporate it into my daily makeup routine.

Application-wise, I’m definitely not a fan. Maybe it’s because of the light shade that I got but I feel like it goes on rather streaky. It could also be because of the heavier and thicker consistency. I don’t want to compare it to the Australis Velourlips Matte Lip Cream which is one of my favourite matte liquid lipsticks out there which applies like a dream but I expected more out of this one from Maybelline, considering how I do like the brand as a whole.

Don’t get me wrong, even with the streaky application, the colour payoff was really good. It’s very pigmented — I just wished it applied better and dries matte faster. Even with a less than stellar review from me, I’d still wear it daily, especially when I’m running quick errands and feel the need to put a bit of colour on my face.

So, would I re-purchase this in another shade? Maybe, I kinda-sorta wanna try the MAT10 shade, which looked like a pinkish purple shade.
